We Recommend Water Line Installation If:

  • Your water pressure has decreased significantly
  • Existing pipes show signs of rust or leaks
  • You’ve had ongoing plumbing issues
  • You want peace of mind with a modern plumbing system

Signs You May Need Water Line Installation

Water Pressure

If there is a clog or break in your water main line, it will generally affect the water pressure in your home, causing it to decrease. When a clog or break is present, less water is able to move through the pipe, and therefore not able to make it to your plumbing fixtures, such as shower heads or sinks. Decreased water pressure is a very common sign of a broken water main.

Increased Utility Bills

Has your monthly water and utility bill randomly increased? If it has and you notice any of the other symptoms listed here, you may have a clog or break in your water main. When there is a break in the line, it will often waste excess water, causing a significant increase in your monthly utility bill. If you notice that your water bill has increased out of nowhere and you are experiencing at least one of these other symptoms, you should contact Steve’s Plumbing & A/C Service – Big Island about replacing your water main right away.

Water Pooling

If you have wet patches or pools of vibrant grass throughout your lawn, you likely have a water main line break. Patches of vibrant grass, water pools, and a foul odor from the water is an almost indisputable indication that your water main has suffered a break. In the event of this, you will need expert help immediately before extensive damage to your home, property, and the water main line itself becomes even worse, costing you even more in potential repairs.

Contaminated Water

When a water main line breaks, dirt and debris can get inside of the pipe and eventually your water supply. Because water main lines are underground, a lot of potentially toxic and hazardous objects can leak into your water supply, resulting in you and your family potentially becoming sick. If you notice that the water from your sinks, bathtubs, and drains appears to be discolored and fragrant, you may have yourself a main water line break.

Odd Noises

Another sign that your water main may be in need of replacement is unfamiliar, loud noises coming from your plumbing when it is not being used. If you notice water moving or other random plumbing noises throughout the night while these appliances are not being used, this is an indication of an issue that will need to be resolved within your water line.

Multiple Clogged Pipes

If you notice that many of your toilets, sinks, or shower drains are constantly getting clogged no matter how much snaking or store-bought drain cleaner you use, this is a sign that your water line is either clogged or has broken entirely. This can also happen if your sewer line is clogged or broken as well. Either way, you will need to call in the experts at Steve’s Plumbing & A/C Service – Big Island to help determine whether a repair or replacement is necessary.

Water Line Installation In Big Island, HI FAQs

Catchment properties have their own supply infrastructure including the storage tank, first-flush diverters, distribution pumps, and the supply lines running from the tank to the house. All of these are plumbing systems that require installation, repair, and maintenance. A plumber is needed when distribution lines are leaking or undersized, when the pump system needs replacement, when additional lines are added for new fixtures or outbuildings, or when the property transitions from catchment to county water service or adds county water as a supplemental supply.
On properties where lava rock is close to the surface, water line installation requires either rock breaking along the trench path or directional boring to navigate underneath the rock layer with minimal surface disturbance. The choice depends on the depth of the rock, the length of the run, and how much surface disruption is acceptable. Where boring isn’t practical and rock breaking is required, the broken material is removed and the pipe is bedded in appropriate fill material to prevent the sharp lava edges from damaging the pipe over time.
Connecting to the county water system requires a meter application and connection fee through the Hawaii County Department of Water Supply, a licensed plumber to install the service line from the meter to the house, and a permit for the work. The existing catchment distribution system inside the house can often remain in place and be connected to the new county supply, with the catchment tank retained as a backup. The process takes coordination between the homeowner, the county, and the plumbing contractor, and Steve’s Plumbing & A/C Service manages the plumbing side of that process.
HDPE is the most durable option for underground water line installations on the Big Island. It resists the mildly acidic soil chemistry found in volcanic areas, doesn’t corrode, handles ground movement better than rigid pipe due to its flexibility, and has a long service life. Copper performs well in most Big Island conditions but is more susceptible to certain soil chemistries and is less forgiving of ground movement. PVC is widely used and performs adequately in most locations, though it’s more brittle than HDPE in areas with significant seismic activity.
It can, particularly when lava rock excavation is involved. The cost difference depends on how much rock is encountered along the pipe’s path, the depth required, and how far the run extends. Properties in newer lava zones or in areas with thin soil over dense basalt will face higher excavation costs than those in older weathered areas where the rock has broken down into soil. Getting a thorough site assessment before committing to an installation budget is important on the Big Island for exactly this reason.
