Signs of Water Line Problems

Water Pressure

If there is a clog or break in your water main line, it will generally affect the water pressure in your home, causing it to decrease. When a clog or break is present, less water is able to move through the pipe, and therefore not able to make it to your plumbing fixtures, such as shower heads or sinks. Decreased water pressure is a very common sign of a broken water main.

Increased Utility Bills

Has your monthly water and utility bill randomly increased? If it has and you notice any of the other symptoms listed here, you may have a clog or break in your water main. When there is a break in the line, it will often waste excess water, causing a significant increase in your monthly utility bill.

Water Pooling

If you have wet patches or pools of vibrant grass throughout your lawn, you likely have a water main line break. Patches of vibrant grass, water pools, and a foul odor from the water is an almost indisputable indication that your water main has suffered a break.

Contaminated Water

When a water main line breaks, dirt and debris can get inside of the pipe and eventually your water supply. Because water main lines are underground, a lot of potentially toxic and hazardous objects can leak into your water supply, resulting in you and your family potentially becoming sick. If you notice that the water from your sinks, bathtubs, and drains appears to be discolored and fragrant, you may have yourself a main water line break.

Odd Noises

Another sign that your water main may be in need of replacement is unfamiliar, loud noises coming from your plumbing when it is not being used. If you notice water moving or other random plumbing noises throughout the night while these appliances are not being used, this is an indication of an issue that will need to be resolved within your water line.

Multiple Clogged Pipes

If you notice that many of your toilets, sinks, or shower drains are constantly getting clogged no matter how much snaking or store-bought drain cleaner you use, this is a sign that your water line is either clogged or has broken entirely. This can also happen if your sewer line is clogged or broken as well.

Water Line Installation In Oahu, HI FAQs

A new water line is typically needed when the existing supply line is too small for the home’s demand, when it’s made from an outdated material like galvanized steel or polybutylene that’s prone to failure, or when adding a new structure or irrigation system that requires a dedicated feed. New construction obviously needs a water line from the start. Low water pressure throughout the house can sometimes point to a supply line that’s undersized or heavily corroded.
Copper remains a popular choice for residential water lines due to its durability and resistance to corrosion. PEX tubing has become widely used for its flexibility, which makes routing through tight spaces easier, and it performs well in Hawaii’s conditions. HDPE is often used for underground supply lines and main service connections. Your technician will recommend the right material based on the application and your home’s existing plumbing.
A standard residential water line installation typically takes one to two days. Larger projects, runs through difficult terrain, or work requiring city utility coordination can take longer. We’ll walk through the scope of the job and give you a timeline estimate before work begins so you can plan for any temporary water shutoffs.
Yes. Water line installation in Oahu requires a plumbing permit, and the work needs to pass inspection before the trench is backfilled or walls are closed up. Steve’s Plumbing & A/C Service manages the permit application and coordinates inspections as part of the project so the job is done to code from start to finish.
It can, especially if the existing line is undersized or heavily scaled from years of mineral buildup. Upsizing the service line or replacing a corroded galvanized pipe with copper or PEX can noticeably improve pressure and flow throughout the house. A pressure test and flow evaluation at the start of the job will confirm whether the water line is the limiting factor.
