What is a Solar Hot Water System?

A solar hot water system uses solar energy to heat water for your home. Instead of relying on electricity or gas, these systems use solar panels installed on your roof to absorb the sun’s heat, transferring this heat to your water supply.

It’s a clever and sustainable way to harness the plentiful Hawaiian sun for your everyday needs.

    Advantages of Solar Water Heaters

Solar water heaters aren’t just great for the environment—they’re also great for your wallet and lifestyle.

    Low Monthly Operating Cost

One of the most appealing benefits of a solar water heater is its cost-efficiency. Initial installation costs are quickly offset by the significant savings you’ll see on your monthly energy bills.

    Why?

Because the primary energy source for your water heater is sunlight, which is completely free. This eliminates the need to purchase gas or electricity to heat your water.

In Hawaii, where electricity rates can be high, these savings can be substantial, allowing you to invest that extra cash in other aspects of your life.

    Environmentally Friendly

When you choose to harness solar power for your water heating needs, you’re not just opting for an efficient solution—you’re also making an environmentally conscious choice.

Solar water heaters significantly reduce the need for traditional energy sources like fossil fuels that contribute to carbon emissions.

This means that with each hot shower you take, you’re playing a part in preserving our beautiful islands for future generations by reducing your carbon footprint.

    Low Maintenance

While solar water heaters showcase advanced technology, they don’t demand a high level of maintenance.

These systems are designed to be robust and durable, capable of withstanding various weather conditions. And when you choose Steve’s Plumbing & A/C Service, you gain access to our team of skilled professionals who can conduct regular checks and maintenance.

With our expertise, your solar water heater can last for many years, providing you with consistently hot water and peace of mind.

How Does a Solar Water Heater System Work?

Solar water heating systems operate by collecting sunlight and converting it into heat. This heat is then transferred to your water supply either through a heat exchanger or directly into the water tank.

Solar collectors (panels) installed on your roof absorb the sun’s radiant energy throughout the day. This energy is then transmitted to a transfer fluid or the water directly, depending on your system type.

The heated water or fluid is then stored in an insulated tank, ready for use. So, even on those occasional cloudy Hawaiian days, your system can still collect enough heat to warm your water.

Types of Solar Water Heater Panels

There are two main types of solar heating panels, namely:

    Flat Plate Collectors

Flat plate collectors are one of the most common types of solar panels used in solar heating systems. These panels consist of a large, flat surface (the dark flat-plate absorber) that absorbs sunlight.

As this plate heats up, it warms the heat transfer fluid flowing through pipes attached to it. This heated fluid then moves to the water tank, transferring the heat to your water.

    Evacuated Tube Collectors

Evacuated tube collectors are a highly efficient type of solar panel. They consist of a series of vacuum tubes, each containing a smaller tube that absorbs sunlight.

The vacuum around these tubes provides excellent insulation, preventing heat loss. This absorbed heat energy is then transferred to the water or transfer fluid.

Types of Solar Water Heating Systems

Understanding the different types of systems can help you choose the one best suited to your home’s needs and the unique Hawaiian climate. The following are some of the different types of solar heating systems:

    Active Systems

Active solar water heaters use electric pumps, valves, and controllers to circulate water or other heat transfer fluids from the collectors to the water tank. These systems offer more precise control over water temperature and circulation, making them highly efficient.

Active systems are broadly categorized into two types: Direct Circulation Systems and Indirect Circulation Systems.

    Direct Circulating Systems

Direct circulation systems, as the name suggests, directly circulate household water through solar collectors and into the home. They use a pump to move the water from the collectors when the sun is shining.

These systems are great for regions like Hawaii, where we’re blessed with plenty of sun and freezing temperatures are not a concern.

    Indirect Circulating Systems

Indirect circulation systems, on the other hand, circulate a non-freezing transfer fluid through the solar collectors and a heat exchanger.

The heat collected is then transferred to the water that is stored in the tank. This type of system is advantageous in places with freezing conditions, protecting the system from potential cold weather damage.

While not as necessary in our warm Hawaiian climate, they provide an additional level of reliability and can also be used in our paradise.

    Passive Systems

Passive solar water heating systems operate without the need for electric pumps or controllers. They rely on the natural principle of convection to circulate water.

As water in the solar collector heats up, it naturally rises into the storage tank, while cold water in the storage tanks descends to the bottom of the collector, creating a continuous circulation pattern.

While not as efficient as active systems, they’re simpler, reliable, and can be more affordable, making them an excellent choice for many homeowners.

    Evacuated Tube Systems

A solar water heating system with vacuum pipes, or evacuated tube systems, is among the most efficient in converting sunlight to heat. The tubes have a vacuum that insulates and protects the system from heat loss, making them particularly effective even on colder or cloudier days.

The tubes absorb the sunlight and convert it into heat energy, which is then transferred to the water or heat transfer fluid. The design of these systems allows them to capture sunlight from any direction, maximizing their effectiveness throughout the day.

    Types of Solar Collectors

There are three primary types of solar water collectors:

    Batch Solar Collector

Batch collectors, also known as Integral Collector Storage (ICS) systems, work by heating water in dark tanks or tubes that are housed within an insulated, glazed box.

As sunlight strikes the tank or tubes, it heats the water inside, storing it until it’s needed. The heated water is then drawn into the home when a hot water tap is opened.

Batch systems can be a practical choice for many homes here, though they may require a conventional water heater for backup on cloudy days or during periods of high demand.

    Flat-Plate Solar Collector

Flat-plate collectors are one of the most commonly used types of solar heat collectors. They consist of an insulated, weatherproof box that houses a dark absorber plate beneath one or more transparent or translucent covers.

As sunlight strikes the absorber plate, it warms up, and this heat is transferred to a fluid (either water or a heat transfer fluid) that flows through tubes attached to the absorber plate.

This design allows flat-plate collectors to capture a significant amount of solar heat effectively, and they can be used in a wide variety of applications.

While they’re a little more complex than batch collectors, they can be more efficient and provide a higher output of hot water.

    Evacuated Tube Solar Collector

Evacuated tube collectors are at the forefront of solar collector technology, providing excellent insulation and high efficiency. They’re composed of rows of parallel, transparent glass tubes, each of which contains a smaller tube, or absorber, covered with a special coating that absorbs solar energy well but inhibits radiative heat loss.

The space between the two tubes is evacuated to form a vacuum, which provides great insulation. This design helps the collectors achieve higher temperatures than other types of collectors, making them an excellent choice for applications that require higher water temperatures.

While they tend to be more expensive than other types of collectors, their superior performance can often justify the cost, especially in locations like Hawaii.

Your Plumbing & AC Dream Team

Audie was the representative from Steves Plumbing that came to our house. He was very professional and had a warm friendly demeanor. Audie was able to quickly diagnose the problem. He took his time to explain the situation, what needed to be done with our shower valve and explained everything in a way that we can easily understand it. He also noticed the brands on our fixtures in our bathroom (toilet, sink) and gave recommendations on what he believed would be more durable. We believed this is going above and beyond his duty. If we ever have any plumbing needs in the future, we will definitely call Steves Plumbing and specifically ask for Audie.

We have been a customer for almost 20 years. They do good, professional work with aloha. Response time has always been excellent. Today I broke a water pipe and they responded immediately. They sent VICTOR, who we HIGHLY RECOMMEND! WE WILL ALWAYS USE STEVE’S PLUMBING!

    – Diana M.

I called Steve’s Plumbing on a Sunday morning and the service guy was here before noon without charging extra for Sunday! Billy fixed my clogged sink and spent over 3 hours clearing the clog that was way down the pipe. He was professional and explained everything to me. The price was reasonable considering all the work he did. I was very happy with the results.

    – Susie C.

Victor overhauled our main property water shut off the box. A lot of corroded handles/valves that were not an easy DIY project. The office gave courtesy calls before he arrived on time. He was very patient in answering all of my many questions and concerns. Explained options to me & also introduced me to the “Ohana Membership” (be sure to get it). Upon completion, he was very thorough in showing me “what did what”. No more confusion or concerns. He even took time to answer other questions I had about a different “project”. He really takes pride in his work & it shows. Mahalo!
