Signs You Need a Whole Home Dehumidifier

Uncomfortable Temperatures

Having high humidity is extremely uncomfortable. The air feels sticky, wet, and hot, and makes it very difficult to ever get comfortable. This sticky humidity feeling is unmistakable: if you have experienced it, there is no forgetting it! If you are suffering from uncomfortable temperatures and the byproducts of an overly humid home, you likely are in need of a whole-house dehumidifier system.

Wet Interior Windows

Windows produce moisture on their exterior quite frequently due to weather and the elements. But, if you have noticed moisture on the interior of your windows, you likely have a problem with excess moisture and humidity in your Oahu, HI home. In homes with high humidity, windows and/or other glass surfaces will produce condensation, which is a tell-tale sign you are in need of expert whole-home dehumidifier installation services.

Mold

Anytime there is mold in your home, there is too much moisture! While this can sometimes be due to other issues, such as plumbing leaks or roofing leaks, for example, if you are experiencing any of the other mentioned signs and have found mold in your Oahu, HI home, you probably have excess humidity in your home. Mold can be extremely dangerous to you and your family’s health and will need to be addressed right away.

Water Stains

Much like condensation on your windows, when there is excess moisture in your home, condensation can build up on your walls as well. This will usually result in water stains across your walls. If you are noticing water stains on your walls, particularly in combination with any of the aforementioned signs of excess humidity, you will need to have a whole-home dehumidifier installed before these water stains turn into mold!

Incorrect HVAC Unit or Furnace

When your HVAC system and/or your furnace are the incorrect size, typically when they are too large for your Oahu, HI home, this can result in excess moisture and humidity. If you are experiencing high humidity in your home, your HVAC unit or furnace may be the issue! In the event you suspect that your HVAC unit may have been incorrectly installed and too large for your home, you will need to have your home inspected and evaluated for a whole-home dehumidifier system.

Dehumidifier Installation In Oahu, HI FAQs

Air conditioning does remove some moisture as a byproduct of cooling, but it’s most effective at humidity control only when it’s actively running. On mild days in Oahu when the temperature doesn’t call for much cooling, the AC runs less often and humidity can climb inside the home. A whole-home dehumidifier manages moisture independently of temperature, keeping indoor humidity at a target level year-round without having to overcool the space to dry the air out.
The two main categories are ducted whole-home dehumidifiers that tie into the existing HVAC system and treat air as it passes through, and standalone whole-home units that operate independently with their own air circulation. Ducted models integrate with the thermostat and air handler for centralized control. Standalone units are useful in homes without central ductwork, like many Oahu homes with only mini-splits. Sizing is based on the square footage and typical moisture load of the space.
Ducted dehumidifiers are typically installed in the attic or utility space, connected to the return air side of the HVAC system. Standalone units are positioned in a central location with adequate airflow. Both types need a drain connection or condensate pump to remove the collected moisture continuously. Steve’s Plumbing & A/C Service handles the installation including the drain routing so water doesn’t have to be manually emptied.
A standalone whole-home dehumidifier installation typically takes two to four hours. A ducted system that integrates with the existing HVAC and requires duct modifications takes longer, often most of a day. We’ll assess your home’s layout and give you a specific timeline before scheduling the work.
Installation cost depends on the unit size, type, and how much integration work is needed with your existing HVAC system. Equipment ranges widely in capacity and features. We’ll provide a detailed estimate covering the unit and installation so you can evaluate the full cost before deciding.
